Lefkada Island

Lefkada is a lovely Island and is one of the seven main Islands in the Ionian Sea. Out of these seven islands, Lefkada is the only one connected by a floating bridge making traveling to Lefkada fairly accessible. You can travel to Lefkada by car out of Athens airport (ATH) or fly in into Aktion Airport (PVK) located an hour away.
Right before entering Lefkada over the bridge, there is the Venetian castle of Agia Mavra. The castle of Agia Mavra was built in 1300 with the purpose to protect the new Capital of the Island from pirates and other enemies. In Lefkada town you will find an archeological museum and the open theater where many theatrical and musical events take place in the summer. For more of a mythological history lesson, German archaeologist W. Dörpfeld suggested that Lefkada was Homer’s Ithaca and that Odysseus’s palace was located in the south side of Lefkada, in Nidri Town. There is also the myth of ancient poet Sapho’s suicide at cape Lefkada that is related to other myths connecting the island to the ancient Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite. You will notice that the Islands architecture was greatly influenced by Venetian civilization resulting in colorful buildings with unique tin elements.
Discover the unbelievable waters of this Ionian Island by visiting some of the most popular beaches in the world, like Porto Katsiki and Egremni which are on the southwest of the Island. You can also visit other impressive beaches like Kathisma, Agios Nikitas and Milos that are located closer to the Lefkada town. The beaches in Lefkada are impressive, with not only the waters being phenomenal, but there also being surrounding mountains with lush green scenery that will take your breath away.
While visiting Lefkada you can visit some of the nearby villages like Karia, Egglouvi and Sivros to get a taste of Greek village life. Looking for a bite to eat or a place to get a drink?
